A readers writes:

"Chronic back pain? Causes? Solutions?

So, I've been suffering from back pain for almost three years, but nothing major. In the past six months, however, it has worsened considerably. I wake up in the middle of the night because of it; when I cough I can feel it in my back; it stops me from enjoying some things.
The problem is that it isn't limited to any specific part of my back. All along my spine from in between my shoulder blades down to my tail bone all along both sides of my spine, it hurts. Recently, it has mostly been in the middle of my back. I went to my family physician and got several blood tests and three x-rays done.
The only thing that they found was a very mild scoliosis, but nothing that should be causing me this much, if any back pain. I've been going to physiotherapy for it to prevent the scoliosis from getting worse, but my back pain has not been reduced. I've tried different painkillers (Aleve, Tylenol, Advil) but the relief they provide is so temporary and the pain in my back literally never stops. Ever. Does anybody have any suggestions for me?"

My reply to the reader:

Chronic back pain is caused by muscle fatigue. Most medical commentaries only deal with the 'bone and disc' problems. Scoliosis is a combination of bone AND muscle. Anyway, '10 Cures For Sciatica and Back Pain' has the best tips to get you pain free. Here's an excerpt:

"A friend of mine with Scoliosis recommended Voltaren Gel. He said the product would be a ‘god send’ for relief. I was not able to use it myself, but it is a topical that is non-steroid. The active ingredient, diclofenac, works by reducing hormones that cause inflammation and pain in the body. Voltaren Gel is typically used to treat arthritis pain in the hands, wrists, elbows, knees, ankles, or feet caused by osteoarthritis. See if your doctor can recommend it to help reduce the disc swelling for you"
